National Bureau of Statistics Website Hacked: Public Advised to Disregard Content-OXYGIST

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has confirmed that its official website was compromised by hackers, urging the public to ignore any information published on the platform until the issue is resolved.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday night, the NBS assured Nigerians that efforts were underway to regain control of the site. “This is to inform the public that the NBS Website has been hacked, and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you,” the agency posted.

This cyberattack occurred just a day after the NBS released its comprehensive crime experience and security perception survey report, shedding light on alarming trends across the country.

According to the report, Nigerians paid a staggering N2.23 trillion in ransom for kidnappings within a year, spanning May 2023 to April 2024. Additionally, the NBS recorded a total of 51.89 million crime incidents affecting households across the nation during the same period.

The survey highlighted that the North-West region reported the highest number of crime cases, surpassing 14 million incidents. In contrast, the South-East recorded the lowest figures, with over six million cases. Furthermore, crime rates in rural areas (26,526,069 incidents) were notably higher than those in urban areas (25,360,963 incidents).
