A tragic accident on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge on Monday morning left one person dead and five others injured. The crash, which occurred near Ilubirin, inward Sura, involved a J5 Ford bus (FKJ 724 YC) and a Mercedes truck (FKJ 746 YC).
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, reporting that the J5 Ford bus, loaded with pepper and other perishable goods, collided with the truck due to suspected brake failure. The bus was reportedly traveling at high speed when the brakes failed, leading to the devastating collision.
LASTMA officials, with the assistance of bystanders, launched a swift rescue operation. Four victims were pulled from the wreckage, three of whom were rescued alive. Sadly, one person trapped inside the J5 Ford bus succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
Emergency response teams, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Police Force, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), collaborated to provide immediate medical assistance. The survivors were rushed to the General Hospital on Lagos Island for urgent treatment.
To prevent further disruptions, LASTMA’s rescue team worked efficiently to clear the accident site. The vehicles and scattered perishable goods were promptly removed, ensuring the free flow of traffic along the busy bridge.
