Prominent APC chieftain in Lagos, Joe Igbokwe, has called on authorities to address the ongoing abuse of Nigeria’s currency, the naira. Taking to his Facebook page on Sunday, Igbokwe expressed concern over the practice of throwing naira notes on the ground at social events such as parties, funerals, and naming ceremonies.
Igbokwe questioned whether the ban on naira abuse had been lifted, as the illegal act continues to persist.
He wrote: “Let me remind the concerned authorities that Nigerians are still throwing naira notes on the ground and walking on them at parties, burials, and naming ceremonies. Have we lifted the ban? Just so you know.”
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has long prohibited acts that deface or mutilate the naira, viewing such behavior as a disrespect to the national currency. Enforcement of this regulation has seen some high-profile individuals penalized for their actions.
Notable cases include the sentencing of popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, to six months in jail for naira abuse. Similarly, socialite Pascal Okechukwu, widely known as Cubana Chief Priest, was arraigned on charges of currency abuse. While he pleaded not guilty, he was granted bail pending further proceedings.
