The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has expressed deep condolences to the families of the children who lost their lives during the tragic stampede at a children’s funfair held on Wednesday at Islamic High School, Bashorun, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Otunba Moses Olafare, the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, the revered monarch also extended sympathies to the Oyo State Government, Agidigbo FM owned by Oriyomi Hamzat, and the Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS) organization led by his former queen, Ms. Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi.
“We share in the grief and pain of the affected families. We pray that Olodumare grants them the strength to endure this trying period,” the statement read.
The palace commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his swift response to the tragedy and pledged its support to efforts aimed at bringing solace to the affected families.
“This tragedy highlights the urgent need for collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of children across Nigeria,” the Ooni said.
Reflecting on the former queen’s past contributions, the palace noted Ms. Naomi’s dedication to children’s welfare during her time at Ile Oodua. “While at Ile Oodua as queen, Ms. Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi passionately demonstrated love and care for children through similar events, providing support to children from underprivileged families, especially during the festive season,” Olafare added.
The statement also called for immediate measures to prevent such tragedies in the future, urging strict adherence to safety protocols and the implementation of robust child welfare policies in schools and public events.
The Ooni’s Palace reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote safety and healing in the aftermath of this devastating incident.
