President Bola Tinubu has extended the tenure of Dr. Oluwatoyin Madein as the substantive Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) until March 7, 2025. The decision was communicated through a letter issued by the Head of Service of the Federation and confirmed on Thursday.
Previously, Tinubu had appointed Mr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi as Acting Accountant General following Madein's pre-retirement leave. However, in a turn of events, the President has reassigned Ogunjimi to the Public Service Institute of Nigeria as Director of Accounts.
Bawa Mokwa, the spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), clarified that the directive reinstates Madein to her role, allowing her to continue overseeing treasury operations until her retirement. Mokwa also noted that under civil service regulations, terminal leave is optional, creating some uncertainty about Ogunjimi’s appointment as Acting AGF.
While the letter does not explicitly nullify Ogunjimi's appointment, it effectively postpones his assumption of the Acting AGF role pending further directives from President Tinubu.
Madein’s reinstatement has been welcomed by her supporters, who highlighted her commitment to completing critical projects and reforms initiated during her tenure.
“By the first week of January 2025, we will start commissioning the projects she began. She felt it was important to see them through and not let another person take credit for her efforts,” a supporter shared with The Nation.
The move is also seen as an effort to restore stability within the OAGF. Mokwa reassured stakeholders, stating, “Madein will be signing documents and checks on behalf of the AGF. She has returned, so no more rancor within the treasury.”
