The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that the Federal Government (FG) is prepared to welcome Nigerians who may be deported from the United States.

Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media and Corporate Affairs at NiDCOM, disclosed this during an interview on Tuesday, January 28, stating that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for handling such developments.

Balogun further revealed that the FG has established an inter-agency committee to manage the situation if a large number of Nigerians are deported from the US. The committee includes:

  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs

  • NiDCOM

  • Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs

  • Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA)

“The Federal Government has set up an inter-agency committee to handle any mass deportation of Nigerians from the US,” Balogun stated.

Despite concerns, NiDCOM clarified that it has not received any official confirmation regarding the deportation of Nigerians from the US.

However, reports indicate that 3,690 Nigerians are currently facing deportation as part of the US government’s crackdown on illegal immigrants. A list released by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in November 2024 identified these individuals as potential deportees.

With Donald Trump back in office, there are growing speculations that the number of affected Nigerians may rise as immigration policies tighten.
