Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has spoken out regarding rumors of a merger with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
At a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday morning, Obi dismissed claims of any finalized agreements, emphasizing that no deals had been reached with any political party. Instead, he urged patriotic Nigerians within the political landscape to come together in preparation for the 2027 elections. According to him, collective efforts are necessary to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of poor resource management.
Obi criticized the pervasive corruption in the country, lamenting the soaring cost of governance and the mounting public debt under the APC-led administration of President Bola Tinubu. He also condemned the misuse of public funds, citing the frequent foreign travels by government officials in 2024 as a significant example of wasteful spending.
On national security, Obi expressed deep concern over the ongoing issues of banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings, which he described as a tragic reality for many Nigerians. He called for swift and decisive measures to address these challenges and safeguard the lives of citizens.
In a related development, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, also addressed rumors of a power-sharing deal involving himself, Obi, and PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Kwankwaso denied any knowledge of such an arrangement, expressing frustration over the allegations. He mentioned reports of Atiku’s camp engaging with regional leaders and clerics to propagate the claims but firmly distanced himself from the narrative.
The former Kano State governor reiterated his satisfaction since leaving the PDP to join the NNPP, maintaining that no discussions of a power-sharing deal had taken place.
