Speaking during a visit to the 35 Artillery Brigade Alamala in Abeokuta, on Tuesday Lt. Gen. Oluyede acknowledged the concerns raised by the brigade commander, particularly regarding accommodation. He assured soldiers that immediate steps would be taken to address visible challenges, stating that additional housing units would be approved before his departure from the barracks.
“The GOC was here weeks ago to commission some blocks on my behalf. As I go on tour, I can assure you that before I leave, I would have approved more to be built so that your families can be happy,” he said.
The Army Chief emphasized that under his leadership, soldiers’ welfare remains the top priority. He noted the sacrifices they make for national security and assured them of continued support from the military hierarchy and the federal government.
“I have simply come here this afternoon to tell you that I put you first before anybody. Under my watch, the soldiers will come first, and your welfare will be our priority. We understand the sacrifices you are making for Nigeria, and we appreciate you very much,” he said.
Lt. Gen. Oluyede also highlighted the importance of affordable housing for military personnel, lamenting that some officers retire without a place to call their own. To address this, he announced plans to expand the army’s affordable housing scheme, with new projects set to begin in Ibadan, Jos, and Port Harcourt.
“So we are looking at how we can improve on the already established affordable housing, we are trying to see how we can expand it .
“As I speak, we are trying to start it in Ibadan, Jos, Port harcourt so that by the time you are leaving the army , no matter how little, you’ll have a place where you can keep your family so we are working on that .”
On financial welfare, the COAS revealed an increase in daily feeding allowances for soldiers, acknowledging that the previous sum of ₦1,500 was insufficient. He announced that from next month, the amount would be raised to ₦3,000 under the new budget.
He further disclosed plans to inject more funds into the Nigerian Army’s loan scheme, which offers loans at a minimal 3% interest rate—significantly lower than commercial bank rates. However, he urged soldiers to utilize the scheme responsibly, advising them to apply only when facing genuine financial challenges.
“Our job is to defend this country and make Nigeria safer. For that to happen, we must continue to do our best. A secure environment is essential for national development, and I charge you all to remain committed to the task,” Oluyede said.
He reassured soldiers of the government’s appreciation for their service, stating that while security has improved, more effort is needed to achieve a safer and better Nigeria.
“As your leader, I will do my best to improve your conditions, but you must also do your part to make Nigeria better,” he concluded.
