Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero has spoken out in defense of Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman after the Atalanta manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, publicly criticized him following the club’s disappointing Champions League exit.
Lookman, who has been a key player for Atalanta in recent seasons, found himself at the center of controversy after their shocking 5-2 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge. The Belgian side, considered underdogs in the tie, stunned the Serie A club, knocking them out despite Atalanta’s strong position in the competition.
Atalanta suffered a 2-1 loss in the first leg but were expected to bounce back at home. However, the return fixture in Bergamo turned into a nightmare as Club Brugge raced to a 3-0 lead by halftime. In a desperate bid to turn things around, Gasperini introduced Lookman, who had just returned from injury, at the start of the second half.
The Nigerian international made an immediate impact, scoring within a minute to offer a glimmer of hope. Later, Atalanta won a penalty after Juan Cuadrado was fouled in the box. Lookman, designated to take the spot-kick by a teammate, stepped up, only for Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to deny him. Atalanta never recovered, sealing their exit from the tournament.
In his post-match press conference, Gasperini’s frustration was evident. Instead of focusing on his team’s defensive lapses or captain Rafael Toloi’s red card, the veteran manager publicly blamed Lookman for missing the penalty.
Del Piero, one of Italy’s greatest-ever forwards, was unimpressed with Gasperini’s handling of the situation. The Juventus icon warned that such public criticism could create tension within the squad.
"Mistakes like a missed penalty happen—it’s human," Del Piero said, as quoted by Tutto Atalanta.
"Regardless of the internal dynamics, I wouldn’t have reacted the way Gasperini did. Lookman’s response today speaks volumes. He’s having an extraordinary season, yet he’s being publicly blamed, which could destabilize the dressing room. Let’s see how the team responds."
Lookman did not remain silent. In a heartfelt social media statement, he expressed his disappointment over Gasperini’s remarks.
"It saddens me to write this on a day like this—especially considering what we’ve achieved together as a team and as a city," he wrote.
"Being singled out in this manner not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful. I have always given my all for this club and its incredible fans. During the match, the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the kick. To support the team, I took responsibility. Life is about challenges and turning pain into power, which I’ll continue to do."
With tensions rising between Lookman and Gasperini, Atalanta’s management is stepping in to prevent further fallout. Senior club officials are set to meet with both parties to mediate the situation.
However, Lookman’s future at the club is now uncertain. Having won Atalanta’s Player of the Season award twice in a row, he remains a crucial asset, but reports suggest he could be on the move this summer.
Juventus, who also suffered a Champions League exit, are reportedly interested in signing the Nigerian star, with a potential €60 million move being discussed. Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool have also been linked with Lookman in the past, making Atalanta’s task of keeping him even more challenging.
The 26-year-old has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists in 28 appearances across all competitions. Whether he stays in Bergamo or moves on, Lookman’s talent remains undeniable, and his next step could be pivotal for his career.
