Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has sparked controversy after suggesting that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is not a major tournament while discussing Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.
Speaking on Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City, Carragher claimed that Salah’s nationality and Egypt’s international record could hinder his chances of securing football’s most prestigious individual award.
“I think the problem [is] the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such or maybe got a great chance of winning,” Carragher said.
He emphasized that players who excel in the Champions League or so-called ‘major’ international tournaments—like Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé—are usually the frontrunners for the Ballon d’Or.
His remarks quickly drew backlash, with former Manchester City defender Micah Richards stepping in to correct him.
“Just to say, AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying ‘they aren’t taking it seriously.’ AFCON is a big tournament, just so you know.”
Carragher, however, doubled down on his stance, implying that only teams with realistic World Cup-winning prospects influence the Ballon d’Or race.
Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge was quick to shut down the argument, saying:
“If you win the Euros or Copa América, it’s deemed to be big, so the AFCON is on the same level.”
Despite the controversy, Salah remains a strong contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or, thanks to his exceptional performances for Liverpool. The Egyptian star has already scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists this season and could lead the Reds to a historic treble, including the Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup.
Carragher’s comments have reignited the debate on AFCON’s global recognition, with many emphasizing its rich history, competitiveness, and significance in world football.
