Muraina Taiwo, a member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), has stated that the ongoing crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly has spiraled beyond the council’s ability to resolve without the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.
On Monday, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police stormed the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, sealing the offices of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk. The security personnel conducted thorough searches and restricted access to the affected offices, intensifying tensions within the Assembly.
The crisis stems from the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who has since challenged his removal in court and refused to acknowledge Meranda’s leadership, deepening divisions among lawmakers.
In an interview with Punch, Taiwo dismissed speculations that Obasa orchestrated the DSS invasion, arguing that someone who had taken legal action wouldn’t resort to such measures.
“If Obasa was behind the invasion, he wouldn’t have gone to court. Since the matter is already in court, he would let the legal process take its course,” Taiwo said.
He also noted that the GAC no longer has full control over the situation, stating, “If the GAC’s influence was still effective, the lawmakers would have complied with its directives.”
Addressing speculation about Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s involvement, Taiwo rejected claims that the governor had a hand in the crisis.
“In politics, the more you look, the less you see. What exactly are they accusing the governor of? There’s no evidence that he is backing any faction. It’s all political maneuvering,” he added.
