Nigerian street-pop sensation, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted on multiple charges, including armed violence, assault, obstruction of government officials, felony, and intent to kill.
The singer was arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, after being declared wanted by the police on February 18. He surrendered to the authorities in Lagos on Wednesday and was subsequently handed over to the Ogun State Police Command.
The charges stem from a February 5 incident when officials from the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority (OGPDPA) attempted to seal his bar due to a lack of proper permits. Portable allegedly led an attack against the officials, who sustained injuries but managed to escape. While the singer initially evaded arrest, nine of his associates were apprehended and arraigned on five charges, including armed violence, felony, obstruction, assault, and intent to kill.
Under Nigerian law:
- Armed violence carries a penalty of up to 14 years in prison.
- A felony conviction could result in 7 years to life imprisonment.
- Obstructing government officials is punishable by up to 7 years in prison.
- Assaulting public officers can lead to a sentence of 10 to 14 years.
- The most severe charge—intent to kill—could result in life imprisonment or even the death penalty, if proven.
If the court sentences him consecutively for multiple charges, Portable could face up to 20 years behind bars. However, if the court finds substantial evidence for the intent-to-kill charge, he might receive a life sentence. On the other hand, if certain charges are downgraded or mitigating factors are considered, he could receive fines, a reduced sentence, or community service.
The case has generated widespread public debate, with some supporters arguing that Portable is being unfairly targeted, while others believe this legal battle is a defining moment for the controversial artist.
His next court appearance will determine whether he is granted bail or remains in custody pending trial.
