A Minna Magistrate Court in Niger State has ordered the remand of a 70-year-old man, Sabo Mohammed, for allegedly stabbing police prosecutor Inspector Nasir Musa to death over suspicions of an affair with his junior wife.
According to police reports, the tragic incident occurred on March 3 when Mohammed attacked Musa with a sharp knife, believing he was involved with his wife. Musa, who was attached to the Manigi Magistrate Court, was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Bida for treatment but was later pronounced dead.
The offence falls under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law, which carries the death penalty.
During the court proceedings, police prosecutor Inspector Ogiri Emmanuel stated that the case file would be forwarded to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
When the charges were read, Mohammed pleaded guilty, expressing deep regret for his actions.
“It was the devil’s work. I regret taking the law into my hands and beg the court for leniency,” he said.
Presiding Magistrate Hadiza Imam condemned the act but clarified that the court lacks jurisdiction over culpable homicide cases. She adjourned the case to April 15 for further mention, pending legal advice from the Ministry of Justice, and ordered that Mohammed be remanded at the Minna Correctional Centre.
