The House of Representatives has reversed its decision to remove immunity from the Vice President, governors, and deputy governors.
The decision was rescinded on Thursday following a motion moved by Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, during a plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
The bill, which had passed its second reading on Wednesday, was sponsored by Solomon Bob, a PDP lawmaker from Rivers State.
Bob argued that the proposal aimed to enhance accountability in public office by removing the immunity currently granted to these officials.
Under Section 308 of the Nigerian Constitution, the President, Vice President, governors, and deputy governors are shielded from civil and criminal proceedings while in office. The law also prohibits their arrest or imprisonment and protects them from any court summons requiring their appearance.
With this reversal, the existing constitutional protections for these public officeholders remain intact.
