NGO donates waste materials to Lagos Park, tasks drivers on cleanliness

Some volunteers under the aegis of Victory Island Association, an NGO, on Saturday called on individuals to imbibe the culture of cleanliness for their wellbeing and for the environment.

They spoke in interviews with journalists while embarking on the NGO’s yearly CSR at the Oshodi Bus Terminal on Saturday in Lagos.

Victory Island Association comprises volunteers from all works of life who take giving back to the society as a priority.

President of the group, Oyeniran Emmanuel, said that little was being done to educate people, including drivers, on the importance of cleaning the environment especially with renewed focus of the government at enhancing infrastructural development.

“There is not enough done right now to educate people on cleanliness; we have to get into the parks ourselves, we have to tell them, the market women, passersby, children and everyone that matters, because cleanliness is next to godliness.

“We are rededicating ourselves to help government in transforming our society from the dirty and littered environment to a place where everyone sees reasons why our environment should not be littered in the first place.

Another volunteer who's the CSR planning committee chairman, Abdulai Monsuru Olawale said that improper waste disposal could be destructive to the ecosystem, posterity and mankind in general.

“We consider cleaning up imperative, because waste management is actually an issue that should be taken with utmost importance, reason why we are donating over 300 waste basket to drivers in the park.

“VIA is an association geared toward ensuring a friendly and helpful environment and we do that through a couple of communal responsibilities."

In his response, the Chairman Lagos State Parks and Garages Management represented by Alhaji Ismail Oyeleye urged the drivers to use judicious use of the waste baskets given to them and inculcate the habit of cleanliness at all time.

Oyeleye said: “There is only one way to keep our society clean; it is a collective responsibility.

“Do not throw rubbish; it is not just dirtying the area, it is also dangerous to our health.“

He appreciated members of VIA for the generosity urging other well meaning Nigerians and groups to replicate the gesture.
