INEC issues Certificate of Return to Ogun speaker after supplementary election victory

 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday, issued Certificate of Return to the Speaker, Ogun Assembly, Mr Olakunle Oluomo, after his victory at a supplementary election held on April 15.


Presenting the Certificate of Return at the INEC office in Abeokuta on Wednesday,  Mr Niyi Ijalaye , said that Oluomo was declared winner of the supplementary election held on April 15 at Ifo 1 state constituency.

He noted that the presentation of the certificate was in accordance to the provision of section 72-1 of the Electoral act 2022 which mandated the commission to do so within 14 days of declaring a candidate the winner of election.


Oluomo was reelected after polling 7,546 votes to defeat the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Okikiola Ogundele Okikiola who scored 6,569 votes.



The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would occupied 17 seats of the 26-member State House of Assembly while PDP would have nine in the 10th legislature.


 Ifo State Constituency 1, Unit 4 was cancelled by INEC due to over-voting which trailed the March 18 governorship and House of Assembly elections.


The Speaker would be returning to the House for the fourth time.


In his acceptance speech, Oluomo appreciated God for the victory, saying that it was a tough election.


He also commended the people of his constituency for standing by him, noting the democracy in the country was improving every election.


" Our democracy is deepened in this part of the world . Legislators are not suppose to be one timer, people should allow there legislators to be nurtured at the House, experience is very key in legislating," he said.


The speaker appreciated INEC for a wonderful job in the conduct of both the presidential and the governorship elections.


" The election of 2023 is a fantastic one, kudos to INEC," he said.


Oluomo also thanked the people of the state for reelecting Gov. Dapo Abiodun, saying that it was an opportunity to continue to enjoy more dividend of democracy.
