The governor made the announcement during the celebration of 2024 Democracy Day, held at the Kuto Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, the state capital on Wednesday.
Abiodun, while addressing the gathering of traditional rulers, government officials, students, union leaders amongst others, discloses that the gesture is to grant a “merciful second chance to the convicts’ towards inclusive society.
The governor also noted that the decision came after receiving the guidance of Ogun State advisory Council on the prerogative of mercy.
“Having received the guidance of the Ogun State Advisory Council on the prerogative of mercy, I have signed the appropriate warrants, ordering the release of 41 convicts currently imprisoned across different correctional centers in Ogun state.
“I have also Signed the Death sentences of 45 inmates to prison sentences. This gesture today is a break from past grievances and a move towards a more inclusive and compassionate Society where merciful second chances Are granted to deserving offenders”, the governor said.
According to Governor Abiodun, all the beneficiary convicts have shown resource, while some of them have acquire skills and have obtained university degrees from prison.
“All Convicts who have received this gesture have shown remorse for their crimes. They have acquired skills, some of them have even acquired certifications in prison with several of them receiving University degrees from the National Open University of Nigeria”.
Meanwhile, Governor Abiodun said June 12 signifies the commitment of Nigerians to democracy and the belief in the better future of Nigeria.

“His courage and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals remains an inspiration to us all. His campaign slogan “Hope 93” was more than a message of Hope. It was a national Reawakening rooted in faith and Limitless ability of Nigerians to face their challenges and solve the problems of nation building.
