President Bola Tinubu has appointed Prof. John Obafunwa as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), succeeding Prof. Babatunde Salako. Prof. Salako's tenure ends on July 23, and Prof. Obafunwa will assume his new role on July 24.
In a statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s spokesman, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to Prof. Salako for his service and highlighted the expectations for Prof. Obafunwa to leverage his extensive experience to advance NIMR’s mission. The institute aims to lead research into diseases of public health significance in Nigeria.
President Tinubu also emphasized the need for Prof. Obafunwa to foster the dissemination of research findings and enhance health research and training infrastructure in collaboration with federal and state health ministries.
Prof. Obafunwa brings a robust academic and professional background to his new role. He earned his medical degree from the University of Lagos in 1980, specialized in Anatomic Pathology by 1987, and later pursued Forensic Pathology in Scotland in 1991. Additionally, he obtained a law degree from England in 2004. Prof. Obafunwa is a member of numerous professional bodies in the UK, USA, and Nigeria, and has worked in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, and the UK before returning to Nigeria in 2004 to become a Professor of Forensic Pathology at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).
