On Monday, former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode made a notable return to the government house in Alausa, Ikeja, where he paid a courtesy visit to his successor, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. This marks Ambode’s first visit to the government house since his defeat in the 2019 APC governorship primary.
Ambode, who served as governor from 2015 to 2019, was the first Lagos governor in the democratic era to serve only one term. Sanwo-Olu, who succeeded him, shared on social media that their discussion focused on the future of Lagos and the ongoing efforts to build on the existing foundation.
“Today, I welcomed my brother and predecessor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, back to Lagos House on a courtesy visit,” Sanwo-Olu wrote. “Our conversation centred around the future of Lagos and building on the solid foundation already in place. I value his perspective as we all work together to ensure that Lagos remains on the path of growth and development.”
Ambode's political journey took a different turn after losing the primary election, reportedly due to a fallout with President Bola Tinubu, who is often seen as a key figure in Lagos politics. Following his defeat, Ambode largely withdrew from public life, making only occasional appearances. However, in recent times, he has been taking steps towards reconciliation.
In June 2023, Sanwo-Olu attended a private party at Ambode’s residence to celebrate the former governor’s 60th birthday, signaling a warming of relations between the two leaders.
