On Monday, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, announced an official ban on the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests in Lagos following President Bola Tinubu’s address to demonstrators. The Commissioner declared at a press briefing on Sunday that any gatherings in the state are now considered illegal since the President's speech.
"The protest has been called off because of the President’s speech. They believe that the President has spoken, and they are looking forward to him meeting their demands. In view of that, there should be no more gatherings here or anywhere; any such gatherings are considered illegal and unlawful. Since it has been called off, we will apply the full weight of the law," Fayoade stated.
The nationwide protests, which began on Thursday, have entered their fifth day, demanding economic and political reforms. Violence in some areas has prompted state governments to impose curfews.
In Abuja, where protests have been mostly peaceful, police have used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse crowds. Despite the President’s televised plea for an end to the demonstrations, without offering substantial concessions, protests continued on Sunday.
Many businesses, including banks and grocery stores, closed on Thursday and Friday due to the protests but reopened over the weekend as demonstrations dwindled.
