Taiwo Awoniyi's future at Nottingham Forest is looking uncertain as the club intensifies negotiations with Feyenoord to sign Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez.
After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, the Tricky Trees are keen on bolstering their squad this summer. Awoniyi, who was brought in from Union Berlin two seasons ago, was expected to be a key attacking force. Unfortunately, his stint has been plagued by injuries.
The 27-year-old forward has managed to score 17 goals and provide 4 assists in 54 appearances. However, his injury woes have seen him miss 35 games over the past two years, both for club and country. This has led to Chris Wood overtaking him in the starting lineup.
The situation may become even more challenging for Awoniyi as Nottingham Forest pursues Gimenez. The Mexican has been a prolific goal scorer for Feyenoord, accumulating 53 goals and 13 assists in 89 appearances over the last two seasons.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Nottingham Forest has already made a €25 million bid for Gimenez, which Feyenoord has turned down. With Transfermarkt valuing Gimenez at €40 million, Feyenoord might hold out for up to €50 million before agreeing to a transfer.
If the deal goes through, Gimenez is likely to become Nottingham Forest's main striker, pushing Awoniyi further down the pecking order.
