In a concerning turn of events, Nigerian players and coaches have found themselves stranded at Al Abraq Airport in Libya for over 15 hours. Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, has addressed the situation as the Super Eagles await clearance to continue their journey.
Olusegun confirmed that the Nigerian government is actively communicating with its mission in Libya regarding the players’ predicament. The team is in the North African nation to compete in a qualifier for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against the Mediterranean Knights.
In a post on X, he stated, “Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, @YusufTuggar, is in close contact with the Nigerian Mission in Libya through CDA Amb Stephen Anthony Awuru. They have been liaising with the NFF and Libyan authorities since last night, but permission for travel to Bayda City has not yet been granted.”
To aid the situation, the CDA has dispatched Mr. Morris Eromosele, the head of the Nigerian community in Benghazi, who arrived this morning with essential supplies and internet access for the stranded team.
“The minister is closely monitoring this unfortunate situation and awaits further updates for the next steps,” Olusegun added.
