The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 13 suspected internet fraudsters in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. The arrests were made during a sting operation on Monday, October 7, 2024, following credible intelligence about the suspects' involvement in online scams.
This was confirmed in a statement released by the EFCC's Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale. According to Oyewale, the operation took place in the Nwaniba area of Uyo, leading to the recovery of several items linked to the suspects' fraudulent activities.
Recovered from the scene were two Lexus 350 saloon cars, a Toyota Camry V6, and a Toyota Corolla. The EFCC also seized six laptops and 20 smartphones, which were believed to be tools used in their internet scams.
In the statement, Oyewale said, "Operatives of the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 13 suspected internet fraudsters in the Nwaniba area of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State." He further emphasized that the arrests were made after an extensive investigation into the suspects' activities.
The EFCC confirmed that the suspects will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
