Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has disclosed that he has been receiving only half of his salary since assuming office on May 29, 2023. This is part of his administration's efforts to manage the state's finances and offset the significant debt inherited from the previous government.
Governor Sani explained that the Kaduna State government has been making monthly debt payments of N4.7 billion, deducted from the state's federal allocation. The governor noted that while Kaduna should be receiving around N12 billion, it currently gets only about N8 billion due to these deductions.
Governor Sani also shared that cost-cutting measures have affected more than just his own salary. The salaries and performance bonuses of commissioners, as well as that of the Deputy Governor, have been reduced as part of efforts to lower governance costs.
Despite the financial challenges, the governor expressed his commitment to resource management, avoiding complaints, and focusing on continuity in governance. He emphasized that no new vehicles had been purchased for him, the Deputy Governor, or any commissioners since he took office, as they prioritize prudent spending.
Regarding Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Governor Sani revealed that the state’s IGR account with Zenith Bank faces monthly deductions of around N800 million, as part of the inherited debt.
"We are making sacrifices to ensure that we manage the resources we have," Governor Sani said, underscoring his administration's dedication to overcoming Kaduna's financial challenges.
