Libya in Turmoil as CAF Demands Clarification on AFCON Match Cancellation Against Nigeria-OXYGIST

The Libyan Football Federation is in a state of anxiety after receiving a request from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to provide documentation concerning the cancellation of the AFCON qualifying match against Nigeria's Super Eagles.

This turmoil follows an incident where the Super Eagles’ flight was diverted to Labraq Airport, where they were detained for over 18 hours without food or water. Faced with this ordeal, the team ultimately decided to boycott the match and returned home.

According to Libya Al-Ahrar Channel, Nasser Al-Suwaie, the Secretary-General of the Libyan Football Federation, confirmed that CAF has set a deadline of October 20 for both the Libyan and Nigerian football associations to submit relevant documentation regarding the situation.

Al-Suwaie indicated that the Libyan FA has hired a specialized lawyer to compile the evidence, suggesting that there could be potential collusion involving some parties within CAF. However, he asserted that the Libyan Federation’s stance remains robust.

He emphasized that the Libyan Federation did not alter the flight's landing destination; rather, the decision to redirect the plane to Al-Abraq Airport was mandated by the Libyan state, underscoring the need for respect for the country’s sovereignty.

The Super Eagles returned to Nigeria on Monday after their harrowing experience at the airport, leaving the future of the AFCON clash in uncertainty.
