The President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, has assured Nigerians that the Super Eagles will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite a shaky start to their campaign, Gusau expressed optimism about the team’s prospects.
So far, the Super Eagles have struggled in the qualifiers, managing three 1-1 draws and suffering a defeat to Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic in June. With just three points from four games, Nigeria sits fifth in a group of six, trailing behind South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin Republic by four points.
Despite these setbacks, Gusau remains confident that Nigeria will turn things around and avoid a repeat of their failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
"I have full confidence that we will qualify for the 2026 World Cup," Gusau told TV360. "We’ve had a rough start, collecting only three points from four matches, but the team is showing progress. Everyone understands the importance of this moment, and we are fully committed to supporting the Super Eagles."
Gusau also highlighted the team’s upcoming campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, emphasizing the goal of winning a fourth AFCON title. "We are just beginning our AFCON qualifiers, and by the grace of God, we will bring home the trophy," he added.
For now, the focus shifts to the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, where head coach Augustine Eguavoen will lead the Super Eagles in a crucial two-legged clash against Libya. The first match is scheduled to take place this Friday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, with the return leg happening next Wednesday in Libya.
