The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has strongly defended its role in Nigeria's fight against corruption, dismissing calls for the agency's dissolution. EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, stressed that Nigeria would collapse under the weight of corruption without the commission.
During an interview on Channels Television's The Morning Brief, Uwujaren expressed concern over the recent legal challenges against the EFCC, with around 16 governors questioning the legality of its establishment. He warned that those pushing to dismantle the anti-graft agency are driven by self-interest, as they seek to escape accountability.
“Nigerians need to see through this charade,” Uwujaren stated. “Without the EFCC, I don’t see how this country can survive, given the rampant corruption we’re facing. Nigeria simply cannot do without the EFCC.”
Uwujaren explained that those challenging the EFCC’s existence are likely feeling the pressure of the agency’s work. “What you see is a clear attempt by individuals who are feeling the heat of our operations. They see the EFCC as a threat and want to derail the fight against corruption,” he said.
He argued that the commission’s establishment is grounded in Nigerian law and that any effort to question its legality is aimed at weakening transparency and accountability in the country. “Those pushing for the EFCC to be scrapped don’t want accountability in their states. They want to dismantle the fight against corruption, and we must not allow that to happen,” Uwujaren added.
The EFCC spokesman urged Nigerians to support the commission, emphasizing that the agency remains crucial in the ongoing battle to hold corrupt leaders accountable and maintain transparency in governance.
