The Lagos State Police Command has officially cleared Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal of any theft allegations related to a gold incident at Oba Akintoye Market on Lagos Island.
In an interview with Punch, police spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin revealed that investigations showed the accusations stemmed from a misunderstanding. He stated,
“There was no case of stealing. Our inquiry revealed that the seller provided an incorrect account number. Out of the ten digits required, one was wrong, leading to Lizzy transferring funds to the wrong account.”
Hundeyin added that the supposed theft was a case of mistaken identity. “When it became clear that she was falsely accused, Lizzy decided to drop the charges after the suspects had been arrested and the case was in court,” he explained.
Further details indicated that those who accused Anjorin-Lawal admitted to their error while giving statements at the police station. They confirmed that the seller had provided faulty account details, resulting in a transfer of approximately N90,000 into the incorrect account. To rectify the situation, Lizzy subsequently made a second transfer to the correct account.
The actress, a mother of one, had visited the bustling market in February to purchase items when she was wrongfully accused of theft. A video of her being harassed by traders circulated widely on social media, prompting police action. Six traders were arrested and charged with assaulting and blackmailing her. Those charged included Qudus Jokogbola, Suru Olawale, Edu Shakirat, Fausat Mohammed, Kafayat Ahmed, and Opere Simiat Morenike, with two others still at large. They pleaded not guilty in court and were granted bail of N200,000 each.
