Reps Criticize Tinubu for Delayed Submission of 2025 Budget Proposal-OXYGIST

The House of Representatives has voiced strong criticism of President Bola Tinubu over the delayed submission of the 2025 budget proposal to the National Assembly. Lawmakers argue that this delay undermines their ability to carry out essential legislative functions.

According to the lower chamber, the Executive's failure to comply with Section 11(1)(b) of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2007 is infringing on the time needed for the National Assembly to perform its duties, as outlined in Section 88(2)(b) of the same act.

In response, the lawmakers have urged the Executive to adhere to the Fiscal Responsibility Act and have tasked the committees on National Planning and Economic Development, Appropriation, and Finance to ensure compliance within the next two weeks.

This action followed a motion of urgent public importance presented during Wednesday's plenary session by Representative Clement Jimbo. He emphasized that the Fiscal Responsibility Act is crucial for the prudent management of the nation’s resources, ensuring macroeconomic stability, and promoting transparency and accountability in fiscal operations.

Jimbo pointed out that Section 11(1)(b) mandates the Federal Government to prepare and submit the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) to the National Assembly no later than four months before the start of the next financial year.

He further highlighted the constitutional provisions that grant the National Assembly the power to investigate any matter related to its legislative responsibilities, including the management of funds appropriated by the Assembly.

The House has resolved to "urge the Executive to comply with Section 11(1)(b) and submit the 2025 Budget Proposal to the National Assembly without further delays," emphasizing the importance of timely fiscal planning for the nation’s economic future.
