Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has rejected rumors suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is indifferent to the challenges Nigerians are facing. Responding to online claims, Onanuga emphasized the President’s focus on easing the hardships experienced by citizens, reaffirming that Tinubu’s policies aim to bring positive change.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics on October 27, 2024, Onanuga addressed the trending “T-Pain” nickname given to Tinubu, calling it “mischievous” and far from representative of the President’s goals. “The President feels the pain of Nigerians and is working tirelessly to ensure that better days are coming sooner rather than later,” he said, stressing that Tinubu’s administration is focused on economic recovery, not creating additional burdens.
Onanuga clarified that Tinubu does not engage in monitoring social media and that the nickname does not reflect the President's commitment to Nigeria’s welfare. He acknowledged the current economic struggles, especially rising inflation and increasing food and energy prices, but pointed to the government’s ongoing efforts to stabilize and grow the economy.
Addressing the policies of petrol subsidy removal and the unification of forex rates, Onanuga explained that while these reforms have led to short-term discomfort, they are essential for the nation’s long-term stability and economic growth. Despite protests urging the government to reconsider, Onanuga stressed that these measures are crucial for Nigeria's future prosperity.
In his final remarks, Onanuga urged Nigerians to be patient and trust in the President’s vision. “President Tinubu is not here to inflict pain, but to create a better future for all,” he concluded.
