Tragedy struck in Otukpo, Benue State, as unknown gunmen reportedly killed a lawyer, Mike Ofikwu, outside his residence on Otukpa Street. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, has left the community in shock.
Sources reveal that the attack was premeditated, with two armed men lying in wait for Ofikwu. As he arrived home and waited for his gate to be opened, the assailants emerged from their hiding place and shot him at close range.
Despite efforts to save him, Ofikwu was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Spokesperson Catherine Anene assured the public that an investigation is underway to track down those responsible. “We confirm this unfortunate incident, and investigations are ongoing. We extend our condolences to his family and friends and promise that justice will prevail,” she stated on Thursday.
Police Officers Ambushed in Abia State, Identities Revealed
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Abia State, gunmen ambushed police officers in Ohafia Local Government Area on Wednesday morning. The attack, carried out by six assailants, occurred at approximately 7:30 am and resulted in the death of ASP Etet Ubokulo.
According to reports, the attackers also seized ASP Ubokulo’s rifle. Two other officers, ASP Etim Obungha and CPL Chukwuma, managed to escape the assault. CPL Chukwuma, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, is currently receiving treatment at the 14 Brigade Hospital. However, ASP Obungha’s whereabouts remain unknown as investigations continue.
