Why Doyin Okupe Says He Can No Longer Support Peter Obi-OXYGIST

Doyin Okupe, former Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, recently announced he can no longer support the former Anambra State governor. This decision comes as Okupe publicly shifts his allegiance, citing differences with Obi over shared agreements and regional representation.

In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Okupe explained his position. Prior to the 2023 general election, Okupe had actively supported Obi, advocating for a Southern presidency. However, Okupe revealed that he agreed with notable Southern leaders, including Afenifere leader Baba Adebanjo, that the presidency should specifically come from the Southeast.

Okupe expressed disappointment, noting, “I cannot support Peter Obi again. We had an understanding that the South should produce the president, and within that, it was agreed the Southeast would have our backing.”

Reflecting on the past alignment among Yoruba leaders who supported this cause, Okupe added, “To bring us down publicly after all the support is simply wrong.”
