Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has voiced his disappointment over the perceived lack of support from his male colleagues in promoting his latest film, The Waiter.
In a heartfelt post shared on his social media platforms, AY reflected on the challenges he faces as a male filmmaker in the Nigerian entertainment industry. He hinted at what he believes to be an imbalance in recognition and support, often favoring others.
“One day, man go tell man ‘wetin man do man,’” he wrote. “We work so hard to stay relevant and take care of our responsibilities. Must we have breast and yansh to gain the support of our fellow men?”
AY’s remarks suggest a perceived gender bias in Nollywood, where he feels male filmmakers often have to work harder to earn the backing of their peers.
Despite these frustrations, AY reaffirmed his commitment to promoting The Waiter, describing it as a “beautiful movie” and pledging to continue pushing it personally in cinemas nationwide.
“I am still the only man left in the business of filmmaking who is yet to give it all up. I will continue to PERSONALLY push it with my full chest… I am too legit to quit,” he added.
AY’s candid comments highlight the broader struggles male filmmakers may face in the industry. His reference to “breast and yansh” underscores his belief that female entertainers may receive more attention and support, even for similar efforts.
