Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over a recent directive by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, regarding the distribution of palliatives to the less privileged.
Obi acknowledged that while the directive aims to address public safety concerns following stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), it may inadvertently discourage acts of compassion.
The IGP had warned against unauthorized palliative distribution and instructed organizers of such activities to involve security agencies to prevent further tragedies. However, Obi argued that the directive, though well-intentioned, is open to misuse and could create unnecessary barriers for those willing to assist vulnerable Nigerians.
In a post shared on his X account on Monday, the former Anambra State governor stressed the importance of fostering coordination rather than imposing bureaucratic hurdles.
“The latest directive of the Inspector General of Police, placing restrictions on the distribution of palliatives, is disturbing,” Obi wrote. “While it responds to recent tragedies and acknowledges the challenges posed by economic hardship, it risks discouraging citizens from helping the hungry and distressed among us.”
Obi emphasized the need for balance, suggesting that acts of goodwill should not be stifled by excessive regulation. He called for better organization to ensure aid reaches those in need safely and efficiently.
“This is not the time to stifle the spirit of compassion and generosity among our people,” he said. “Instead, let us channel these efforts constructively, ensuring that help reaches the most vulnerable. The focus should be on promoting coordination, not imposing barriers that deter much-needed acts of kindness.”
Obi also urged the government to address the root causes of economic hardship, which have left many Nigerians in dire straits, rather than creating obstacles for those stepping in to help.
“I urge the IGP to immediately review this directive and ensure that the police fosters collaboration and support, not division and discouragement, in our shared quest to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians,” Obi concluded.
