Fatal Lagos Accident Claims Life of Bus Driver-OXYGIST

A driver of a Lagos Intra-City bus tragically lost his life in an early morning accident on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

According to a statement by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred near the state secretariat, heading toward Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The crash involved a mini bus and a moving truck, reportedly caused by brake failure due to excessive speeding. The impact of the collision left the bus driver trapped in the mangled vehicle.

Swift action by LASTMA officers, in collaboration with the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), led to the rescue of other passengers, who fortunately escaped unhurt.

“Despite coordinated efforts to free the trapped driver, he was recovered lifeless from the wreckage,” Adebayo said. The deceased's remains were handed over to FRSC personnel, with security operatives from the Alausa Police Division providing support throughout the rescue operations.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki cautioned against excessive speeding and underscored the importance of adhering to traffic rules and proper vehicle maintenance.

“This tragic event is a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving. We urge all road users to prioritize safety and exercise caution at all times,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to fostering safer roads and preventing avoidable accidents.
