The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has scheduled the much-anticipated draw for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) for January 15, 2025.
The event will take place at the iconic Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, CAF disclosed in a statement released on Monday.
This draw will determine the group-stage opponents for Nigeria’s Super Eagles B, marking the team’s return to the competition after a six-year hiatus.
The home-based Eagles secured their spot with a remarkable 3-1 aggregate victory over arch-rivals Ghana in the qualifiers, sparking excitement among fans.
Head coach Daniel Ogunmodede has already kickstarted preparations, summoning 26 players for an intensive training camp at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. The camp aims to fine-tune the squad ahead of the tournament, which exclusively features players from domestic leagues.
Scheduled to run from February 1 to February 28, the 2024 CHAN will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
For Kenya, this marks a historic milestone as they host a continental football competition for the first time, following unsuccessful attempts in 1996 and 2018.
Significant improvements to key stadiums, including Kasarani and Nyayo, have alleviated concerns over Kenya’s readiness, while Uganda and Tanzania have also met CAF’s hosting standards.
The Super Eagles B will aim to surpass their previous CHAN achievements, which include a third-place finish in 2014 in South Africa and a runners-up position in 2018, where they lost to Morocco in the final. Despite these commendable feats, the team has yet to clinch the elusive title—a record they are determined to rewrite this time.
The 2024 edition will feature 18 teams, including formidable opponents like defending champions Senegal, Morocco, DR Congo, and Zambia, setting the stage for a thrilling competition.
