A suspected thief, identified as Hashiru, met his end while attempting to steal a motorcycle in the Kango community of Kuje Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The incident reportedly occurred around 11:12 p.m. on Wednesday when Hashiru scaled the fence of Isaac Ishaku’s residence to steal a brand-new motorcycle parked inside the compound.
Usman Ibrahim, a witness, recounted that as the suspect made his way toward the motorcycle, a dog in the compound raised an alarm, alerting the occupants of the house. Responding to the commotion, the residents emerged from their rooms, prompting the suspect to abandon the motorcycle and attempt to flee.
In a frantic effort to escape, Hashiru attempted to scale the fence but slipped and struck his head on a large stone he had used to climb over. Ibrahim explained, "While trying to escape, he fell from the fence and hit his head on the stone."
The suspect sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to a nearby clinic by vigilantes who arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries before receiving medical attention.
A member of the local vigilante group, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Hashiru was a known motorcycle thief in the area. "He had been arrested multiple times for stealing bikes in Kuje," the vigilante revealed.
The remains of the deceased were later handed over to his family in the neighboring Kusaki village.
The spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Adeh Josephine, had not issued an official statement regarding the incident at the time of filing this report.
