The Lagos State Government has announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion ahead of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, set to take place on Saturday, February 15, 2025.
State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this known on Tuesday, confirming that the marathon will run from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Route and Road Closures
The marathon will begin at the National Stadium, Surulere, and follow this route:
- Ikorodu Road towards Anthony (Bertola)
- Gbagada to the Third Mainland Bridge
- Inbound Lagos Island via Dolphin Road
- Alfred Rewane Road, Falomo Roundabout, and Bourdillon Road
- Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge to Admiralty Way
- Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola, and Ahmadu Bello Way
- The race will conclude at Eko Atlantic
To ensure security and prevent unauthorized access, concrete barriers will be placed at key intersections, with traffic enforcement officers from LASTMA, NPF, FRSC, LSNC, and LAWMA stationed along the route.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To minimize disruptions, the state government has mapped out alternative routes:
- From Ikeja: Use Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue, then connect to Eko Bridge and Outer Marina.
- From Badagry/Mile 2: Take the Apapa route via Orile, then link Eko Bridge and Outer Marina.
- From Surulere: Access the island via Iponri/Iganmu, linking Eko Bridge to Outer Marina.
- From Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (Mowe and Environs): Take the Ojota Slip Road, connect to Ikorodu Road, and proceed via Funsho Williams Avenue to Eko Bridge.
- From Okota: Use Mile 2/Orile, then connect to Eko Bridge and Outer Marina.
- From Sango-Otta: Pass through Mushin, link Funsho Williams Avenue, and head to Eko Bridge.
- From Epe-Lekki Expressway (Ajah and Environs): Use Marwa Junction, connect to Admiralty Way, and cross the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge.
- From Lagos Island: Divert to Apongbon Bridge, then Eko Bridge, passing through Costain Roundabout, Iponri, and Bode Thomas.
- Alternative: Travel through Victoria Island, link Independence Bridge, and proceed via Apongbon to Ijora-Olopa and Herbert Macaulay Road.
Third Mainland Bridge Status
The Third Mainland Bridge will be closed to Lagos Island-bound traffic but will remain open for motorists heading to the Mainland.
Osiyemi reassured residents that traffic management officers will be on the ground to ease movement and minimize disruptions. He urged the public to plan their trips ahead and use alternative routes.
He also called for patience and cooperation, emphasizing that these measures are necessary for the 10th Edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon and its successful execution.
