Real Madrid legend Luka Modric has set his sights on extending his stay at the club, potentially playing beyond his 40th birthday.
The 39-year-old midfield maestro showcased his enduring brilliance with a stunning goal in Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Girona, further cementing his status as one of the club’s all-time greats.
Despite seeing reduced playing time in recent months, Modric remains a crucial presence in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, serving as both club captain and a respected dressing room leader. After the Girona match, Ancelotti described him as a “gift to football” and insisted that the decision about his future should be left in his hands.
According to Relevo, Modric has already decided to sign a contract renewal earlier than usual. The Croatian has been accepting one-year extensions, per Madrid’s policy for players over 30, and is reportedly willing to take another pay cut to continue wearing the famous white jersey.
The final call now lies with Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who values Modric’s contributions but will assess whether an extension aligns with the club’s long-term plans. No official announcement is expected until the final weeks of the season.
Since joining from Tottenham in 2012, Modric has made 574 appearances for Real Madrid, placing him 10th on the club’s all-time list. If he stays, he could surpass the 600-game milestone, further solidifying his legendary status.
