The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed that an estimated 14 million Nigerians are struggling with drug addiction, highlighting the alarming prevalence of substance abuse in the country.
This revelation was made by the Deputy Commander of the NDLEA’s Ondo State Command, Mrs. Yetunde Joyifous, during a drug abuse awareness program organized by the Oijefon Youth Council for secondary schools in Ile Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area.
Speaking at the event, Joyifous stressed that the substances being abused are primarily chemical drugs that negatively impact users' mental health. She emphasized that tackling the crisis requires a collective effort from all community stakeholders to work alongside authorities in eradicating drug abuse.
“I want to thank the Oijefon Youth Council for partnering with the NDLEA in the fight against drug abuse in society,” she said.
She also highlighted that teenagers, particularly those in secondary schools, are among the most vulnerable to drug abuse. She called for intensified efforts to protect and educate them on the dangers of substance addiction.
In his opening address, the President of the Oijefon Youth Council, Adedokun Adeyonu, stated that the program was organized to dissuade young people from engaging in drug abuse.
“Drug abuse means using harmful substances like alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs in a way that harms your body and mind,” he explained.
Adeyonu noted that many individuals turn to drugs out of curiosity, peer pressure, or as a misguided way to cope with personal challenges. He also pointed to social influences such as music, movies, and peer groups as major factors driving drug addiction among young people.
He urged society to take a proactive role in shaping a brighter future for the next generation by discouraging drug use and promoting positive alternatives.
The event, attended by secondary school students, also featured officials from the National Orientation Agency (NOA), who reiterated the importance of creating awareness and providing support systems to combat drug abuse effectively.
