A 38-year-old nurse, Amarachukwu Nzekwe, has been arrested in Anambra State for allegedly assaulting her 13-year-old nephew with a heated iron. The incident, which shocked many, was brought to light in a statement released on Wednesday by Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, the Media Aide to the state Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare.
Nzekwe, a native of Ezinifite in Aguata Local Government Area, was taken into custody by security forces in collaboration with the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare after the horrifying act went viral on social media.
During her interrogation, Nzekwe claimed that she was merely disciplining her nephew for allegedly stealing from her. However, the severity of the punishment drew widespread condemnation. According to the statement, Nzekwe used a hot laundry iron to inflict severe burns on the young boy and then confined him at home without providing any medical treatment.
Commissioner Ify Obinabo, who was deeply disturbed by the incident, immediately intervened to rescue the boy. She assured the public that justice would be served for the young victim, stressing that such brutal acts would not be tolerated in Anambra State.
Obinabo also issued a stern warning to others who might consider committing similar offenses, making it clear that the state will take decisive action against any form of child abuse.
As of this report, Nzekwe has been handed over to the police for further investigation, and legal proceedings are expected to follow.
